Religious Significance of Mt. Kailash

In Asia, Mt. Kailash is one of the sacred lands for offering prayers. One can access the mountainous terrains of Mt. Kailash only through treacherous hikes. Its unique shape shows its majestic qualities with sides pointing towards main cardinal directions. In Hindu and Buddhist cosmology, Mt. Kailash is the worldly manifestation of Mt. Sumeru. It is the central axis of the universe. The top of Mt. Kailash is believed to the central point of fixation for cosmos rotation. In Hindu pantheon, Lord Shiva stays there with his consort Parvati and divine vehicle nandi. In Buddhism, Demchong, the tantric god is worshiped in the holy lands of Mt. Kailash. According to Bon mythology, Shenrab, profound founder of the Bon religion came to Mt. Kailash directly from heaven. The followers of Bon also believe Mt. Kailash is a swastika-shaped nine storied mountains which is a complete site of spiritual power. It is the source of four main life-giving rivers like Karnali, Sutlej, Brahmaputra, and Indus. As per the course of the river, the world is divided into four regions.

Like religious figurines like Shiva, Rishabhadev, Agyastyamuni all chose Mt. Kailash as the pristine location to preserve their symbolism of work. The world of mysticism always allures the common man with its magical realism. Everyone wants to explore this world of mysticism but very few can access. Mt. Kailash has located in such a treacherous route one lose hope to complete the trekking. Only the committed devotees can accomplish this pilgrimage tour to establish the soul connection with the divinity. The very idea of the trek around Mt Kailash is a kind of achievement of own self. It is the journey of self-discovery. In the course of the journey, you will start revealing your own identity. You will be subjected to arduous trek to know yourself better. It is an evolutionary process where the pilgrims metamorphose physically and mentally.

The cycle of Karma and Moksha

In the branch of philosophy, the human soul is the source of all our wishes and desire. The human soul takes shape under the influence of emotions and desire. If the human mind gets associated with little things then it gets entangled in the maze of desire. In search of happiness, human souls become engaged with actions. Karma is what we mean actions that can either good or bad. As per committed karma, one faces consequences. Consciously or unconsciously human soul becomes an integral part of this karma. So karma is a celebrated concept among the mortals to achieve reward or punishment. What one achieves in life that is the definition of pure karma. When spiritual thinkers suggest of renouncing worldly pleasure they advise to follow the path of righteousness. Human life is all about the continuous process of metamorphosis. So through Kailash yatra, one re-establishes the eternal relationship with the lord. In front of Kailash, everyone becomes a mere entity of mortality.

Importance of Nirvana

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a majestic experience which you cannot feel unless taking the tour. The pilgrimage tour has always been a constant part of pilgrims to engage in pious culture. So traveling miles to seek the blessings of Lord is the only aim for these pilgrims. One can attain nirvana by maintaining a complete balance between the soul and the body. All across Mt. Kailash you will find pilgrimage sites where one seeks solace. These holy shrines are the pathway to attain eternal bliss. This tour is a self-emancipated tour that requires a complete devotion towards lord. The idea of virtue and vices results in our destination to heaven or hell. Through good deeds, everyone seeks the pathway to heaven. Kailash Yatra assigns the route to heaven for every pilgrim. This pilgrimage tour is for rediscovering own-self in the path of spirituality. Without hardship, it is difficult to find the existence of god. In a similar way, one has to endure destitution to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva. Those who are in search of inner peace, attain liberation in the pristine land of Mt. Kailash. In a lifetime, very few get the opportunity to revive their journey following a righteous path. Kailash yatra actually guides these souls to the right direction of Lord. Mostly on auspicious days of full moon, the pilgrims take this journey to witness the divine madness of the natural beauty.

Nirvana can be attained when one completely submerges in the devotion. One surrenders his own soul to find the ultimate abode of the lord. Purification of the soul is significant before stepping into the holy lands of Mt. Kailash. The circumambulation comprises of two phases – One around Mt. Kailash and other around Lake Mansarovar. In the course of trekking, Lake Mansarovar holds an important role of purifying the human body and soul. One has to be pure from heart and soul to get the darshan of the Almighty. Before the parikrama around Mt. Kailash, one takes holy bath in the water of Lake Mansarovar to clean the sins of the past and present life. Life is not only about your own identity, but there is also a beautiful world around you. The life achieves completeness after dismantling the sins and surrenders them in the world of purity. The pilgrimage tour to Kailash Mansarovar shows you the path of nirvana in harmony.

Casual wears and comfortable walking shoes are recommended to travel to Tibet. Be sure to bring warm clothing as nights and early mornings can be quite chilly to downright cold. Indian woman Pilgrims are strictly advised not to war Sari. Bring all the film, medicine, cosmetics, personal toilet items etc. that you will need from home as these are difficult if not impossible to obtain on the way. A small first aid kit is also a good idea. Also quite useful to have a route map, to know where you are going and have been each day.

What to take:

Winter wear: Gore-Tex material though expensive is highly recommended to beat the chilling cold. Also carry down jacket, raincoat or windbreakers, thermal under wears, Jackets, warm trousers & woolen shirts (cotton will also do), warm sweaters, woolen gloves, sun hat, sun glass, comfortable shoes, light leather boots in case of snow, woolen balaclava (‘monkey cap’) & scarf/dust mask to protect your eyes & nose from dust and cold.

Bring with you:

Snacks along the way. Chocolates, dry fruit, toffees, glucose; ‘namkeen’ etc. Strong water bottle & water purifying tablets. Personal medical kit and Diamox tablet (for high altitude), Sun glasses (to protect your eyes from UV, which is especially strong in high altitudes), sun block or sun screen lotion, wet tissues (Fresh-ones are excellent to wipe off the dust), clothes-line/clips, needle & thread, deo-spray (handy for smelly boots/feet and for a round of spray in the toilet tent!), toilet paper, torch & spare batteries, daypack (small shoulder bag), Camera & films, Binocular.

This is one of the toughest high altitude road journeys on earth. You Must be physically fit – no two ways about that. Generally patients with asthma & heart problems have a problem acclimatizing to high altitudes. In your interests, it is essential that you be examined by your doctor to know about your health condition and your ability to cope up with the rigors of high altitude travel for days in ‘no road’ conditions, extreme cold, dust, trekking to an altitude of 19500ft during the Parikrama, etc.

Altitude Sickness:

As you are traveling over high terrain, you are likely to experience symptoms and discomfort of altitude sickness (headache, loss of appetite, nausea, exhaustion, sleeplessness, breathlessness etc.) until your body adjusts to the elevation. This can take a couple of days or more depending on an individual. For this reason alone, we have made it mandatory to stay 2 nights at Nylam (12000ft) before moving on to the higher altitudes. Be calm, and do not exercise. Do not drink alcohol or smoke prior to and during the tour. We also recommend you carry a strip of diamox tablets. Do consult your physician on the dosage. We provide Gamow bag (a special equipment to prevent sickness from high altitude) on this tour.

The unit of Chinese currency is Yuan. USD 1 = 6.00 Yuan. 1 Yuan = INR 11.00 approx, Money can exchange at Bank of China at Zhangmu or from the locals at Zhangmu or Kodari. Exchange all your remaining Yuan at the end of the trip at Zhangmu itself before re-entering Nepal.
